July 17th  2010 FINDING CONTENT: Memory, Imagination and Poetry

For both beginning and seasoned poets, this workshop will focus on finding poems-to-be in our everyday lives.  We’ll look at possible paths to strengthening our powers of observation, accessing our memories, and stretching our imaginations. Using narrative techniques and playing with opposites, we will energize our poems.  Come to the workshop prepared to generate and supportively critique poems. Bring a poem you’ve written and still like or one you’ve written and don’t like or one that someone else has written and you really love.  We are aiming for an interactive workshop, sharing what works for us in jump-starting our work.

July 24th 2010 USING PROCESS: Shaping and Structuring Poetry

The mile between a good idea and a finished poem is often the road not taken.  In this workshop we will look at some poem-saving suggestions that are all about craft:  the images, voices, techniques and forms that have been in the poet’s forever tool chest.  Be prepared to share some of your recently written poems (I hope even poems you’ve written since the first workshop). Have a good ear and positive advice for the poems of others.  Both workshops will use writing exercises that are challenging, entertaining, and useful–maybe even transformative.
